Mattel has launched its first autistic Barbie doll as part of the Fashionistas line, developed in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) over 18 months. The doll features sensory-friendly elements such as averted gaze, movable joints for stimming, noise-cancelling headphones, a fidget spinner, and an AAC tablet to reflect diverse autistic experiences. The launch aims to promote inclusion, representation, and understanding of neurodiversity, receiving praise from advocates while also prompting discussions on broader societal inclusion.
