NGT Takes Suo Motu Notice of Alleged Illegal Road Work in Arunachal Pradesh

The National Green Tribunal's eastern zonal bench in Kolkata has taken suo motu cognisance of alleged illegal road construction in environmentally sensitive catchment areas of Papum Pare district, Arunachal Pradesh. The tribunal examined a 2023 report claiming road work between Ganga-Taipu and Ganga-Tago lacked proper environmental safeguards. The state’s Environment and Public Works departments were made respondents and directed to respond within a month. The tribunal allowed local individuals to assist but not join as co-applicants. The case is scheduled for further hearing on March 27.
