The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a new advisory to social media platforms, urging stricter measures against obscene, pornographic, and illegal online content. Citing public complaints, parliamentary discussions, and court proceedings, MeitY emphasized the need for platforms to rigorously enforce due diligence obligations. The advisory reminds intermediaries that their legal safe harbor protection under the IT Act is contingent on compliance with IT Rules, 2021, which mandate prompt removal of unlawful content and accessible grievance redressal systems.
