Ryan Routh, 59, was sentenced to life in prison by a US federal court for attempting to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September 2024. Routh was convicted on five counts, including attempted assassination and illegal firearm possession. Prosecutors described the plot as deliberate and aimed at undermining American democracy. Judge Aileen Cannon called the act "deliberate and evil" and imposed life without parole plus additional concurrent sentences. Routh represented himself during the trial and plans to appeal.
