Electricity Amendment Bill Expected in Upcoming Budget Session to Reform Power Sector

Power Minister Manohar Lal announced that the Electricity Amendment Bill, 2025, is expected to be introduced in the upcoming Budget session of Parliament. The bill aims to reform the power sector, improve financial health of debt-ridden power distribution companies, and promote cooperative governance and competition. While some discoms have returned to profitability, about 50 remain in losses. The bill has faced criticism from groups like the All India Power Engineers Federation, which opposes provisions allowing multiple licensees to use existing government discom networks. Consultations with state representatives are planned before finalizing amendments.
