
India records nearly five lakh road accidents and over 1.8 lakh fatalities annually, with overspeeding, helmet non-use, and seatbelt neglect as major causes, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. At the 3rd National Conclave on Road Safety, Gadkari emphasized challenges in changing public behavior and enforcing traffic laws. The government plans initiatives including a graded point system for driving licenses, targeted interventions in high-accident districts, enhanced road engineering, and stricter vehicle safety standards to reduce fatalities.
