Columbia Student Ellie Aghayeva Arrested by DHS on Campus, Later Released

Ellie Aghayeva, a Columbia University senior from Azerbaijan studying neuroscience and political science, was arrested by U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents who entered her campus residence claiming to search for a missing person. Her attorneys state the agents lacked a warrant and no reason was given for the arrest. DHS said her student visa was terminated in 2016 for not attending classes. Following public attention and a mayoral intervention, Aghayeva was released and reported she is safe.
