Maharashtra to Amend Money-Lending Laws Following Organ Trafficking Case

The Maharashtra government plans to amend the Maharashtra Money-Lending Act, 2014, to strengthen regulations against illegal moneylending following a case where a Chandrapur farmer was coerced into selling his kidney to repay an Rs 8 lakh loan. A Special Investigation Team is probing an international organ trafficking syndicate linked to Tamil Nadu and Cambodia. Six unlicensed moneylenders have been arrested, with property seizures ordered. District-level committees have been formed to monitor illegal lending and report quarterly to the government.
