Chandigarh's administration has proposed amending the Capital of Punjab (Development and Regulation) Act to rationalize penalties for over 5,000 pending building violation cases, primarily affecting industrial and commercial properties. The current penalties, which can escalate to nearly the property's value, are seen as disproportionately harsh by business communities. The proposed amendment, sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for parliamentary approval, would empower the UT Administration to adjust penalties for both existing and future violations, offering a long-awaited resolution.
