The Supreme Court has urged the Union government to consider introducing a "Romeo-Juliet" clause into the POCSO Act to exempt genuine adolescent relationships from its stringent provisions. The court noted the law's misuse by families opposing relationships and suggested a mechanism to prosecute those who exploit the Act to settle scores. Justices Sanjay Karol and N.K. Singh also ruled that High Courts cannot order mandatory medical age determination of victims at the bail stage, exceeding their jurisdiction.
