Chandigarh MP Questions Health Infrastructure and Doctor Deployment in Union Territory

Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari raised concerns over gaps in the Union Territory's health infrastructure, highlighting that nearly 180 of 221 doctors are on deputation from Punjab and Haryana, with limited local recruitment and vacancies in critical specialties. In response to his parliamentary questions, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that data on sanctioned doctor posts in states and UTs are not centrally maintained and emphasized that healthcare is primarily a state subject. Tewari criticized the ministry's reply as perfunctory and argued that the Centre remains accountable for Chandigarh's governance, given its status as a UT without a legislature.
