Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Bangladeshi-origin Miya Muslims may constitute 40 percent of the state's population by the 2027 census. He expressed concern that this demographic shift, from 21% when he began his political career to 31% in 2011, could lead to indigenous populations falling below 60%. Sarma also criticized a Congress spokesperson's alleged demand for 48 Assembly seats to be reserved for Muslims, contrasting it with the BJP's call for seats reserved for Assamese people.
