The INSV Kaundinya, en route to Oman, is named after a legendary Brahmin sailor from Kalinga. According to historical accounts and folklore, Kaundinya married Soma, a Naga princess and warrior from Southeast Asia, after repelling a pirate attack. Their union is credited with founding Funan, considered the earliest Indianized kingdom in Southeast Asia, spanning parts of modern Cambodia and Vietnam. The Naga symbol, linked to Soma's lineage, became a significant royal emblem.
