Jammu and Kashmir Police have established the 'Snow Leopard Squad,' a specialized high-altitude combat unit drawn from the elite Special Operations Group, to counter terrorists operating in mountainous and forested regions of the Union Territory. Trained extensively in harsh weather and terrain, including sub-zero temperatures and avalanche-prone areas, the squad aims to neutralize militants who have shifted to dense forests and higher reaches. The unit is also equipped for disaster response and has trained alongside Indian Army para commandos. Deployment has begun in areas like Baramulla and Gulmarg near the Line of Control.
