The Supreme Court has formed a new expert committee to redefine the Aravalli Hills, seeking stakeholder consultation to resolve ambiguities. This follows the court's decision to suspend a previous order based on an earlier committee's recommendations. The new panel will examine if a narrow definition of the hills, restricted to 500 meters between peaks, inadvertently allows unregulated mining in ecologically connected areas. It will also assess if hills with 100-meter elevation form a contiguous ecological formation beyond the 500-meter gap and if regulated mining is permissible in such instances.
