The Delhi High Court is hearing a public interest litigation seeking to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on air purifiers from 18% to 5% and classify them as medical devices, citing severe air pollution. The Central government opposes the plea, arguing that such a reduction without due process would "open a Pandora's Box" and undermine the GST Council's constitutional authority. The Centre contends that classifying medical devices falls under the Health Ministry and that GST rate changes require physical deliberation by all states. The court has granted the government 10 days to file a detailed response.
