Bangladesh Interim Government Detains Awami League Leaders Amid Leadership Crisis

Following Sheikh Hasina's departure to India in August 2024, an unelected interim government assumed control in Bangladesh. The interim authorities have detained numerous Awami League leaders and activists, with over 175 arrests reported in May 2025. In November 2025, Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for alleged crimes during the 2024 uprising. An arrest warrant was also issued for Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Ahead of national elections, the interim government directed law enforcement to act against Awami League members, even without formal charges. The party faces calls to select new leadership from within Bangladesh to rebuild its base amid these challenges.
