Kerala Waqf Board chairperson M.K. Sakeer resigned to contest the upcoming Assembly polls from the Ponnani constituency. His successor, CPI(M) leader K.S. Hamza, who previously contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections unsuccessfully from Ponnani, has been appointed. Though Sakeer cited personal reasons for stepping down, the move is viewed as a strategy to avoid political controversy during his campaign. The CPI(M) aims to retain the seat in Malappuram, a stronghold of the Indian Union Muslim League.
