Mayor Goutam Deb has hinted at a potential expansion of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) jurisdiction. This comes amid growing demands from residents in adjoining rural areas, which have urbanized, to be included in a 'Greater Siliguri' for improved civic amenities. Areas in both Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, despite urban characteristics and proximity to key institutions, remain under gram panchayat control, leading to unmet civic needs. The expansion would bring these developed regions under municipal governance.
