Myanmar's junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has secured a significant lead in the initial phase of the country's first election since 2020, winning 38 out of 40 lower house seats tallied. Despite a lower turnout compared to previous elections, the USDP, led by retired generals, also won most regional seats. International bodies and human rights groups have criticized the polls, noting the absence of anti-junta parties and restrictions on criticism. Further voting rounds are scheduled for January.
