The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the deaths of around 50 cattle at the Raipur Kalan gaushala in Chandigarh, attributing the incident to negligence by local authorities. Justice Sanjay Vashisth criticized regulatory bodies for lax enforcement, particularly regarding the banned use of polythene bags, which postmortem reports linked to the cattle deaths. The court has directed the matter be treated as a public interest litigation and issued notices to the Centre, Chandigarh Administration, and Municipal Corporation to address the issue.
