India's ancient maritime heritage, characterized by extensive trade and civilizational influence across Arabia, Africa, and Southeast Asia, is being revived through the induction of the stitched vessel INSV Kaundinya. This ship, a reconstruction of a fifth-century vessel based on Ajanta Cave murals, utilizes coir binding instead of metal. Such construction was historically resilient and facilitated ancient maritime exchange, as evidenced by discoveries in Oman. The INSV Kaundinya's voyage from Porbandar to Oman aims to reconnect with this rich maritime past.
