The Supreme Court of India has taken cognisance of a trial court in Andhra Pradesh relying on AI-generated, non-existent judgments in its order, deeming such reliance as judicial misconduct rather than a mere error. A bench led by Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe issued notices to the Attorney General, Solicitor General, and Bar Council of India, and appointed senior advocate Shyam Divan to assist. The court emphasized the issue's institutional significance and plans to examine the consequences and accountability involved, highlighting concerns over the integrity of the adjudicatory process. The Andhra Pradesh High Court had earlier found the cited judgments to be AI-generated but upheld the trial court's order on the basis that the legal principles applied were correct. The Supreme Court has stayed further proceedings in the case pending its detailed review.
