India Engages with US to Extend Sanctions Waiver for Chabahar Port Operations

India is actively engaging with the United States to extend a conditional sanctions waiver for its strategic involvement in Iran's Chabahar port, which is set to expire on April 26, 2026. The waiver allows India to continue development and operations at the port, crucial for access to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan. Amid US threats of a 25 per cent tariff on countries trading with Iran and ongoing unrest in Iran, India is exploring options to reduce direct exposure, including transferring committed funds and possibly creating a new entity to sustain its presence. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasizes ongoing dialogue with the US and closely monitors the evolving situation in Iran, reaffirming India's long-standing ties and strategic interests in the region.
