Germany has announced a visa-free transit facility for Indian passport holders transiting through its major international airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. This new policy, unveiled during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's first official visit to India, allows Indian travellers to connect to third countries without needing a separate Schengen airport transit visa, provided they remain within the international transit zone. The move aims to ease travel, reduce paperwork and costs, and strengthen people-to-people ties amid broader bilateral cooperation in defence, trade, education, and technology. However, Indian nationals still require appropriate visas for entering Germany or the Schengen area.
