Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh's first female prime minister and a prominent political figure, died Tuesday at 80 after a long illness. She served two terms and developed a significant rivalry with Sheikh Hasina. Despite being out of power since 2006 and facing legal challenges, Zia and her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), retained considerable support. Her son, Tarique Rahman, is poised to lead the party following his return from exile. Bangladesh is currently under an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
