
Following a December 24 Punjab and Haryana High Court order banning tree felling without prior permission, the Punjab government has sought modification, citing halted development projects and adherence to scientific forestry under approved plans. The court had expressed environmental concerns over Punjab's declining green cover compared to Rajasthan. The National Highways Authority of India also requested easing the ban, noting impacts on key infrastructure projects. The court issued notices for hearings scheduled on January 19.
