Uttar Pradesh's Food Safety and Drugs Administration (FSDA) plans to reform wholesale drug licensing after discovering the sale of over 3.27 crore bottles of codeine-based cough syrups, valued at ₹704 crore. FSDA Commissioner Roshan Jacob stated a proposal will be sent to the state government to strengthen oversight and prevent illegal diversion of narcotic-category medicines. The department is also writing to the central government for guidelines on documenting codeine syrup supply, especially when volumes exceed legitimate medical needs. An investigation into the supply chain is underway.
