West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is an exercise in voter exclusion rather than correction. She claims the process is mechanical, lacks sensitivity, and has caused harassment, including to women changing surnames and eminent personalities. Banerjee also attributes 77 deaths, four suicide attempts, and 17 hospitalizations to the exercise, citing fear and workload, and accuses the Election Commission of political bias and high-handedness.
