Delhi High Court Seeks Response on Plea Challenging Biometric Data Collection Law

Two Jamia Millia Islamia students have challenged the constitutionality of the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022, after Delhi Police collected their biometric data during peaceful protests. The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Centre, Delhi Police, and National Crime Records Bureau, seeking their response. The petitioners argue the Act allows disproportionate collection and indefinite storage of sensitive biometric information, infringing on privacy and protection against self-incrimination, without clear safeguards for data deletion.
