Hedgewar was jailed for supporting the Khilafat movement, not opposing British rule. Speaking at a rally ahead of municipal polls, Owaisi criticized the BJP for using Hindutva narratives to distract from governance failures and border security issues. He also claimed the government's failure to fence the Bangladesh border indicated a lapse in national security.
