Academics are raising concerns about the proposed Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhisthan (VBSA), an apex higher education commission, and its subordinate councils. Critics fear increased government control over policy, standards, compliance, and accreditation, as the VBSA must consult the central government on all policy matters. Concerns also exist regarding a potential shift towards more bureaucrats and fewer academics on the commission compared to the UGC, and the government retaining full funding powers. The VBSA Bill is currently under review by a joint parliamentary committee.
