The Government of India is redeveloping seven ageing government housing colonies in Delhi, covering about 537 acres, to replace old, structurally unsafe low-rise buildings with modern high-rise residential complexes. The project will provide over 21,000 new flats for central government employees, addressing a shortage of more than 20,000 homes. It follows a self-financing model that monetises around 69.41 acres of land for commercial and residential use, generating revenue expected to cover the estimated Rs 32,800 crore redevelopment cost without using taxpayer money. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 2,722 flats and lay the foundation for 6,632 more under the General Pool Residential Accommodation plan.
