During the 1999 Kargil War, Indian actor Dilip Kumar, respected in both India and Pakistan, attempted to mediate peace by speaking with then-Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The call, facilitated by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, aimed to ease tensions, with Dilip Kumar expressing concerns about the insecurity felt by Indian Muslims during conflict. Despite temporary easing, the war continued for three months. The episode was later recounted by former Pakistani foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri based on accounts from Sharif's principal secretary.
