Sri Lanka's former state intelligence chief, retired Major General Suresh Sallay, was named a suspect and arrested in February 2024 in connection with the 2019 Easter bombings that killed over 270 people, including 11 Indians. The attacks were carried out by the Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat linked to ISIS. Allegations exist that prior intelligence warnings, including from India, were ignored. The current government reopened the investigation, citing earlier political interference and cover-up claims.
