India Secures Uranium Supply Deal and Advances Nuclear Energy Plans Including Thorium Use

India has signed a CAD 2.6 billion uranium supply deal with Canada's Cameco, securing around 10,000 tonnes of uranium between 2027 and 2035 under the 2010 India-Canada Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement. India relies heavily on imported uranium, meeting nearly three-fourths of its civilian needs, while maintaining domestic mining for strategic reasons. Experts highlight challenges in uranium sustainability and emphasize thorium-based nuclear energy and recycling as key to India's goal of 100 GWe nuclear capacity by 2047, supported by recent legislative reforms.
