Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a new policy to "push back" individuals declared foreigners by tribunals within a week, aiming to prevent appeals to higher courts. This intensified drive, utilizing the revived 1950 Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, has already seen approximately 2,000 individuals expelled in recent months. Sarma stated that a repatriation treaty with Bangladesh is not necessary for this process, emphasizing the state's resolve to address illegal immigration and safeguard indigenous interests.
