Activists in Garhshankar, Punjab, burned an effigy of the state government to protest the arrest of labour leader Mukesh Malaud. Malaud, president of the Zameen Adhigrahan Sangharsh Committee, was arrested by Punjab Police at Delhi railway station. Protesting organizations, including farmer and labour unions, stated Malaud was leading a democratic struggle for land rights, demanding one-third of panchayat land for Dalits and landless laborers. They accused the government of repression despite its public support for laborers.
