The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received Rs 6,088 crore in political funding for 2024-25, an increase of 53% from the previous year, representing nearly 85% of total funding. In contrast, the Congress received Rs 522 crore, a 54% decrease. This funding landscape follows the Supreme Court's outlawing of electoral bonds in February 2024. Previously, electoral bonds facilitated Rs 16,308 crore in donations, with the BJP receiving 51% and the opposition nearly half. Before electoral bonds, funding was either through disclosed direct donations/trusts or an opaque cash system below Rs 20,000.
