The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court issued a notice to the Maharashtra government challenging its February 2026 rule limiting Right to Education (RTE) admissions to private unaided schools within a one-kilometre radius of a child's residence. The petition, filed by Scheduled Tribe parent Shankar Atram, argues this restriction contradicts Section 12(1)(c) of the RTE Act, which does not specify distance limits for the 25% quota. The court's notice is returnable on March 9, amid protests against the rule.
