Australia's lower house of Parliament passed new gun control laws in response to the December 14 Bondi Beach attack that killed 15 people. The legislation includes a national gun buyback scheme and tougher background checks using intelligence agency data. New South Wales has also introduced limits on gun ownership and more frequent licence renewals. The bill passed 96 to 45 despite opposition from conservative lawmakers, and will now proceed to the Senate. The government also plans to address hate speech legislation alongside these measures.
