Punjab Budget 2026-27 Introduces Monthly Cash Transfers for Women Amid Fiscal Concerns

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented the 2026-27 budget with a total outlay of Rs 2.60 lakh crore, dedicating it to women and emphasizing welfare and growth. The budget introduces the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dhian Satkar Yojna, providing Rs 1,000 monthly to most adult women and Rs 1,500 to Scheduled Caste women, covering about 97% of women. While the ruling AAP hailed fulfilling its poll promises, opposition parties criticized the delay, demanded arrears, and raised concerns over rising state debt and fiscal sustainability ahead of the 2027 elections.
