The Supreme Court on February 9, 2026, refused to grant bail or suspend the sentence of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the custodial death case of the Unnao rape survivor's father. The court directed the Delhi High Court to hear Sengar's appeal against his 10-year conviction on an expedited, out-of-turn basis and decide it within three months. The High Court was also asked to consider the victim's appeal seeking enhancement of Sengar's sentence concurrently. Sengar is serving a life sentence in the related rape case. The Supreme Court emphasized the gravity of offences involving moral turpitude and cautioned against media trials during proceedings. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court sought the CBI's response to a plea by Sengar's brother for suspension of his sentence on medical grounds, with the next hearing scheduled for February 11.
