Iraqi Army Assumes Full Control of Ain al-Asad Airbase After U.S. Withdrawal

The Iraqi defence ministry announced that the Iraqi army has taken full control of Ain al-Asad Airbase in Western Iraq following the withdrawal of U.S. forces. This move aligns with a 2024 agreement between Washington and Baghdad outlining the phased departure of U.S.-led coalition troops and a shift toward a bilateral security relationship. Some U.S. personnel reportedly remain temporarily due to logistical reasons, with full withdrawal planned by the end of 2026.
