The Indian government has notified a second round of legally binding greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for 208 industrial units across five carbon-intensive sectors: petroleum refineries, petrochemical units, textile manufacturing, and secondary aluminium production. These targets, effective through 2026-27, expand the scope of the domestic Carbon Credits Trading Scheme launched in 2023. Major public and private enterprises, including Indian Oil and Reliance Industries, are covered under these amended Greenhouse Gases Emission Intensity (GEI) Target Rules, aiming to reduce emissions per unit of output.
