Mizoram's state assembly passed the Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property (Amendment) Bill on February 24, banning polygamy and enhancing women's property rights upon separation. However, the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), the largest women's group, has urged the government to repeal the amendment, citing concerns that it excludes Mizo women who marry non-tribal men from retaining their Mizo identity and tribal entitlements. MHIP also criticized the lack of consultation during drafting and seeks alternative legal protections for women.
