Government Proposes Seeds Bill and Expands Traceability for Seed Industry

The Indian government plans to introduce the Seeds Bill 2025 in the upcoming Budget session to regulate the seed industry, including mandatory registration of all seed producers and penalties up to ₹30 lakh for selling spurious seeds. Concurrently, the government aims to include private seed companies in the SATHI portal, enhancing traceability of seed production and distribution through QR code scanning. These measures seek to improve seed quality and curb counterfeit sales in an industry valued at over ₹3,800 crore.
