Nicaragua's government announced the release of "tens" of detainees, a move that follows U.S. pressure and comes a week after the U.S. captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, an ally of President Daniel Ortega. While state media showed images of releases, the U.S. embassy stated over 60 people remain unjustly detained or disappeared. Human rights groups identified some released individuals as political prisoners, detained following protests or support for Maduro's capture. The Ortega-Murillo government has been accused of authoritarianism and repressing dissent since 2018.
