Manipur BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte Dies from 2023 Mob Attack Injuries; State Mourning Declared

Vungzagin Valte, a three-time Manipur MLA from the BJP and former minister belonging to the Zomi tribal community, died on February 20, 2026, at a Gurugram hospital due to complications from injuries sustained during a mob attack amid 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur. Valte had been undergoing prolonged treatment, including ventilator support, and briefly returned home in 2025 before his health deteriorated. Leaders across parties, including Prime Minister Modi and Manipur's Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, expressed condolences. The Manipur government declared a three-day state mourning in his honor.
