A Karnataka government-appointed six-member committee, led by former Kannada and Culture Department Director K M Gayatri, has recommended granting second official language status to Tulu. The panel studied Andhra Pradesh's framework for recognizing Urdu and submitted a report highlighting Tulu's historical, linguistic, and cultural importance. Tulu is mainly spoken in Karnataka's coastal districts and parts of Kerala. The recommendation aims to guide procedural criteria if the state decides to formalize Tulu's status, responding to longstanding demands from cultural groups.
